Today, Adelaide will see warm and partly cloudy conditions that are set to give way to a wet, windy and much cooler weekend across the city and much of South Australia.
After a relatively mild end to the working week, Adelaide will climb to 29 degrees on Friday under partly cloudy skies, with north to northeasterly winds strengthening through the day. It’s the calm before a shift, as a front moves across the state and starts changing conditions from Saturday. For locals, that means the next few days will feel very different to today’s warmth.
Saturday is shaping up as the wettest and most unsettled day in Adelaide’s seven-day outlook. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a cloudy day with a very high chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Temperatures will ease back to 26 degrees after a warm overnight low of 20, while winds turn gusty as they swing from northeasterly to northwesterly. Damaging winds are possible about the hills and southern suburbs, so it’s a day to keep an eye on conditions if you’re heading out, especially near exposed coastal areas or elevated parts of the metro area.
By Sunday, the cooler change will be well and truly established. Adelaide can expect another cloudy day with showers likely and a top of just 19 degrees, with brisk northwesterly winds keeping things feeling cooler. Monday stays in the same pattern, with showers most likely in the morning and afternoon, a top of 18 degrees, and winds shifting from west to northwesterly before turning southwesterly later in the day.
The showers begin to ease a little by Tuesday, although cloud will linger and there’s still a medium chance of a shower or two, mainly in the morning. The city is forecast to reach 19 degrees. Wednesday brings another possible burst of wet weather, with a high chance of showers returning and temperatures holding at 19 degrees. By Thursday, Adelaide looks set to turn colder again, with a possible shower, cloudy skies and a top of just 16 degrees. Overnight temperatures through the middle of the week will also dip, reaching 10 to 12 degrees, marking a definite autumn feel across the city.
Across regional South Australia, the story is one of a broad front pushing east and dragging rain, showers, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms with it. On Friday, showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to develop west of about Ceduna, while much of the state remains well above average in temperature ahead of the change.
By Saturday, a band of patchy rain and possible gusty thunderstorms is expected to sweep eastwards across the state, reaching eastern border districts in the afternoon. Isolated showers will persist about western and southern coasts, while temperatures drop behind the change.
On Sunday and Monday, showers will continue across agricultural areas, with possible thunderstorms mainly around coasts and ranges, and conditions staying below average for much of the state. Rainfall totals are generally expected to stay modest, though parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the West Coast and far southern coastal fringes could see isolated higher falls of 15 to 30 mm. In the state’s far north-east, flood impacts are still ongoing, with elevated river and creek levels continuing around Poothapootha Waterhole and Innamincka, and travellers are being urged to check road conditions before heading into affected areas.
Happy Friday!
