Shedeur Sanders’ expected Week 9 start is looking like an interesting one based on the latest rumors surrounding it.
Coach Todd Monken’s Cleveland Browns are preparing to face the New Orleans Saints with QB DeShaun Watson back for practice and Shedeur Sanders expected to start. Watson is working through concussion protocol while Sanders’ draft tumble got an attention-grabbing Skip Bayless take.
ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi described the situation in a message to Browns fans.
“One thing to keep in mind: This is not a trade showcase. The Browns have no plans to deal Sanders at the deadline.”
Sanders played in eight games last season and started seven of them. The son of former NFL legend and current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders passed for 1,400 yards on less than 57% completions. He also tossed 10 interceptions along with seven touchdown passes, while playing in a difficult situation for former coach Kevin Stefanski’s team.
The Browns’ passing game is currently averaging just over 204 yards per game under coordinator Travis Switzer with Watson leading the way. It’s been a passing game by committee approach with Harold Fannin Jr. leading the team with 411 receiving yards and Denzel Boston next at 409 yards.
Sanders, who hired an agent ahead of his Week 9 start, could do better than last year with a year of experience under his belt and a more versatile group of receivers to throw to in Monken’s system. The Browns seem more well organized and smarter as a whole this season, two factors that could work in Sanders’ favor as he prepares to resume his odyssey as an NFL contributor during game time.
The Browns will have their hands full against Tyler Shough and the Saints, but Monken’s team has enough bullets in the chamber to take them down, even with Sanders as its starter.
