Sara Ali Khan has spoken about the challenge of playing Yamini in Udta Teer, explaining why she had to hold back on comedy despite being part of a humour-driven film. The actress, who recently worked with Ayushmann Khurrana on Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, said that playing a character who grounds the humour rather than actively driving it required a different approach.
Sara Ali Khan says holding back comedy was challenging for Udta Teer: “You’re not supposed to do comedy”
Speaking about the experience, Sara said, “It was challenging. I can say this for both Ayushmann and me. So, we just finished doing Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, where both of us have done a fair share of comedy. But now, we’re bang in the centre of this comedy, where we are not allowed to be comic.”
She explained that the challenge lay in resisting the instinct to turn every moment into a comic one. “So, as an actor I ask, ‘What should I do?’ Holding back, having a certain level of pause, and telling yourself that you’re not supposed to do comedy… that was one of the most challenging things,” she said.
Sara also credited her co-star for making the experience easier, adding that both actors had to adjust to a different dynamic after their previous project. “I’m lucky that Ayushmann was with me in that. Because with Pati Patni…, we were at the forefront of comedy. And here, we’re in a film where the comedy happens around us, and to some degree because of us.”
Sara Ali Khan on balancing humour and emotion in Udta Teer
Explaining the need for restraint, Sara said that a comedy requires moments of grounding to make its situations feel believable. “But sometimes in a world where everyone is joking around, everything is humorous, there have to be elements of grounding, and rootedness to make it a realistic experience,” she said.
The actress also reflected on how the role differed from her usual approach to performing. “In my personal life, for sure, I’m not used to being the rooted factor. I’m always the funny one. So, it was quite fun to not bring what I usually bring, glamour and humour,” she added.
Sara’s comments offer insight into her approach to Yamini, a character who is part of the film’s comic situations without necessarily being the source of every joke. Her performance also moves between humour and emotion, with a more serious moment before the climax followed by a comic sequence.
Udta Teer features Sara Ali Khan and Ayushmann Khurrana in key roles. The film’s comedy-driven narrative required the actors to approach their characters differently from their previous collaboration, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do.
