Coach Todd Monken gave an injury update on one of his best defenders before a game against the Tennessee Titans.
Coach Todd Monken’s Cleveland Browns are one of the biggest surprises of the NFL season so far with a 4-2 record headed into Week 7 and Deshaun Watson enjoying a resurgence, and a huge birthday party. The Browns got two key defenders back at practice including safety Grant Delpit, but were awaiting word on fellow safety Denzel Ward.
Ward got an injury update from Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot ahead of the Browns’ road game at Tennessee, and it was tough news with a glimmer of hope.
“Something happened to his finger, and we’re gettin’ in looked at,” Monken said. “Knowing Denzel, I would expect him to play but we’ll see,” he added, with Cabot writing that Ward is listed as questionable for the game.
Ward is one of the NFL’s better coverage safeties and has played in all six games for the Browns so far this season. He has 15 tackles, one interception and three pass break-ups to his name, holding down the back end of the secondary for defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg’s unit.
The Browns have looked better under Monken than in previous years but still have scored less points than they’ve given up, despite their winning record. Watson has played well, but not enough to prevent Justin Herbert Browns trade speculation.
Monken’s Browns are a gritty, resourceful team, and they have a chance to move to 5-2 on the season with a win over a Titans team that hasn’t looked good for most of the year. The Browns aren’t anyone’s pick to make the Super Bowl outside of Cleveland, but if they play their cards right, they have a chance to make some noise deep into fall as they continue to maximize their talents under their new head coach.
