This Truck Eats Garbage Before It Reaches Landfills

#After witnessing a cow die with nearly 5 kg of plastic in its stomach, Akshay Deshpande set out to understand India’s waste crisis. Following more than 780 interviews, he founded Switcheko Sustainability in Hyderabad to explore a better way to manage waste.

The initiative developed a 22-foot solar-powered mobile waste-processing truck that sorts, shreds and processes waste on-site before it reaches a landfill. The project reports having processed over 1 lakh kg of waste, reached more than 4 lakh people and created opportunities for around 180 women. It brings waste management closer to communities while highlighting the importance of reducing plastic pollution and improving waste segregation.

From one heartbreaking discovery to an innovative approach to sustainable waste management, this story shows how local ideas can address bigger environmental challenges. Could mobile waste-processing trucks help Indian cities manage garbage more efficiently? Which city do you think needs one most?
