The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has drawn up a project to remove overhead cables and telephone/Internet wires that have been put up unscientifically.

A demand to remove such cables had been raised through a resolution passed by the Corporation council earlier. Since the cables, which led to many accidents and even loss of life, had not been removed, the civic body has decided to remove them on its own and seek compensation from utility providers, a statement here on Saturday said.

A plan was prepared at a meeting chaired by Town Planning Standing Committee chairperson Pattoor Radhakrishnan. Corporation councillors, officials of government departments, service providers, and franchises attended the meeting.

The contractors will cut and remove all cables that had not been tagged and clean the rest together using machines.

The project will be implemented in 101 wards, with five wards chosen for the first phase. These are Palayam, Fort, Kannammoola, Thycaud, and Perunthanni.

Such a mission had been accomplished successfully only in Varanasi and Mumbai in the country, the statement said.

Mayor V.V. Rajesh will inaugurate the project at 5 p.m. on Monday. Deputy Mayor Asha Nath G.S. will preside.
