Four games into the season, the Philadelphia Eagles are still trying to establish what kind of team they will become.
A 2-0 start has been followed by consecutive losses, creating an early test for a roster that entered the year with expectations of competing deep into the season.
The rest of the month provides an opportunity to change that picture.
Philadelphia has different challenges ahead, from an international trip to two home games that could reveal whether recent problems are temporary or signs of deeper issues.
How the Eagles respond could influence the direction of their season well beyond these next few weeks.
The Eagles Enter a Defining Stretch at 2-2
Philadelphia opened with victories over Washington and Tennessee before losses to Chicago and Los Angeles brought the Eagles back to 2-2. The record itself is hardly disastrous after four games, but the direction of travel matters. An encouraging opening fortnight has quickly given way to questions about how consistently this team can perform.
The 24-20 loss to the Rams exposed several of those concerns. Philadelphia struggled to sustain offense, failed to convert a third down, and dealt with injuries to important players as the game developed. Saquon Barkley left with a hamstring injury, and Quinyon Mitchell and Jonathan Greenard also couldn’t finish the afternoon.
That makes the response more important than the losing streak itself. Early-season results can swing quickly, particularly when injuries alter lineups from one week to the next. Philadelphia now has to show it can adjust rather than let the same offensive and execution problems follow it through another stretch of games.
The immediate schedule offers that chance. The Eagles travel to face Jacksonville in London before returning home for Carolina and Dallas. Those games present different circumstances, but together they should provide much more evidence about whether Philadelphia is correcting its weaknesses or letting them become recurring problems.
The Offense Needs to Find More Consistency

Philadelphia’s offense has yet to settle into a dependable rhythm under coordinator Sean Mannion. The Eagles scored only seven points against Chicago, then followed with 20 against Los Angeles. Through four games, the unit ranks near the bottom of the league in total yardage, making offensive improvement one of the clearest priorities.
Injuries make that challenge more complicated. Barkley is considered week to week with a hamstring problem, while the offense has also dealt with other absences around Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia cannot assume the same personnel will be available every week, so the ability to adjust protections, distribute touches, and keep drives moving becomes increasingly important.
Following NFL stats and analysis can help track whether those areas begin improving as more games are played. Third-down efficiency, rushing production, pressure allowed, and explosive plays can reveal whether the offense is becoming more reliable even before that progress produces a long winning streak.
Hurts does not need every possession to produce a highlight. Philadelphia first needs an offense that can avoid long stretches without sustained drives and give its defense reasonable support. If that baseline improves over the coming weeks, the Eagles will have a much stronger foundation for the more demanding parts of their schedule.
Carolina and Dallas Will Test Philadelphia in Different Ways
After the London trip, Philadelphia returns to Lincoln Financial Field to face Carolina on October 18. Playing at home provides some stability after international travel, but the game will still test how effectively the Eagles can reset and apply whatever lessons emerge from the first part of the month.
The Panthers game also sits in an important position on the schedule. Philadelphia cannot afford to treat it simply as a bridge to the following week’s divisional matchup. Teams trying to build consistency need to handle games where expectations favor them, especially when they are trying to recover from an uneven opening stretch.
Dallas then visits on October 26 for Monday Night Football. The NFC East setting raises the stakes because divisional results can matter when playoff positioning and tiebreakers are settled later in the season. The national spotlight also gives Philadelphia another opportunity to show how it responds when the pressure surrounding a game increases.
Taken together, the two home games can reveal different qualities. Carolina tests whether the Eagles can establish consistency, while Dallas brings divisional familiarity and greater external attention. By the end of that sequence, Philadelphia should have a clearer sense of whether it’s correcting its early problems or letting them become part of its identity.
The Bigger Question: Is Philadelphia Built for the Postseason?
Championship contenders rarely move through an entire season without difficult stretches. What separates the strongest teams is often how quickly they identify what is going wrong and find solutions. For Philadelphia, that means improving offensive execution while managing injuries and preventing two early defeats from developing into a longer slide.
There is still ample time for that response. A 2-2 record does not settle where the Eagles belong in the NFC, just as their 2-0 start did not guarantee another dominant season. The next several games can provide stronger evidence of whether Philadelphia has the consistency and adaptability needed to remain among the conference’s serious contenders.
Results over the coming weeks could also influence the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl odds as expectations around the team continue to develop. A convincing recovery would strengthen the case that the recent losses were an early setback, while continued problems would raise more questions about how realistic a deep postseason run looks.
For the Eagles themselves, the priority is much simpler than any long-range projection. They need better football now. More sustained offense, cleaner execution in serious situations, and successful adjustments when personnel changes would all represent meaningful progress heading into the next phase of the schedule.
What Philadelphia Can Carry Into November
The value of this stretch will ultimately come from what Philadelphia learns and fixes along the way.
The Eagles have already seen how quickly a strong start can lose momentum, and the remaining games give them a chance to build consistency before the season reaches its midpoint.
There will be little opportunity to reset once the month ends. Philadelphia travels to Washington for another NFC East matchup on November 1, so whatever habits emerge now will immediately face another divisional test.
A stronger Eagles team can enter that game with renewed momentum and a much clearer identity.
