The Eagles matchup in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans was supposed to be an easy game against two former foes and current NFL Head Coach Robert Saleh and Coordinator Brian Daboll. It did not turn out to be an easy contest at all.
The Eagles were winless in Tennessee after the franchise moved from Houston in 1999. The last time that the Eagles won an away game versus this franchise was in 1991 against the Oilers. And Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni have never beaten one of current Titans Head Coach Robert Saleh’s defenses in a regular-season game.
In 93-degree heat in Tennessee —not unlike the mid-summer heat wave that overshadowed the 250th celebration in July in Philadelphia — the Eagles offense strugged without several key contributors.
Jalen Hurts — without Dallas Goedert in the game and Saquon Barkley for almost the entire first half after a stinger — committed two untimely turnovers. The first was an interception in the 1st quarter that was returned 92 yards and led to a Tennessee touchdown and then a costly 4th quarter pick with 6:08 left.
The 1st quarter interception was followed by a one-yard Cam Ward plunge for a 7–0 Titans lead. The Eagles responded right back with a 65-yard drive and a two-yard Tank Bisby touchdown run. Philadelphia then took the lead courtesy of a 22-yard scoring pass to Devonta Smith capping off a 81-yard drive. In the 3rd quarter — a 58-yard Jake Elliott Field Goal seemed to put the Eagles in control. But the Eagles defense then surrendered a 69-yard drive by the Titans and a one-yard plunge by Titans quarterback Cam Ward.
With 2:37 left in the 4th quarter — it appeared that the Eagles had held the Titans to a field goal attempt after declining an illegal procedure penalty. But then Tyjae Spears broke a 27-run to move the chains. After a 33-yard field goal by Joey Slye to give Tennessee a 20–17 advantage — the Eagles came right back with no timeouts remaining. A 65-yard drive was capped with a three-yard Jalen Hurts to Darius Cooper touchdown catch to win the game with nine seconds left.
Devonta Smith ended the game with ten receptions for 117 yards and a score. Hollywood Brown ran two reverses in the game. Jalen Hurts threw for 264 yards, two scores, and two interceptions.
