The Eagles weren’t the only Philadelphia football team that won this weekend in the last two minutes. After losing the lead to Long Island University with 2:44 left in the game — Villanova completed a 85-yard drive of their own culmonating in a 13-yard Pat McQuaide to Ja’briel Mace score with only 1:08 left in the contest.
The win gets Villanova back to the .500 mark after a two tough losses in the last three weeks including a down-to-the-wire loss to William and Mary and then a lopsided affair against #16 Louisville 59–13. The Wildcats did beat Bucknell in week 2 by a final score of 17–16.
Last year — despite a 2025 FCS Semi-Final Loss to Illinois last December — the team completed one of the deepest runs by Villanova Football in years. Last year’s season ended in the FCS Playoff Semifinals with a 30–14 home loss to #2 Illinois. The Wildcats defeated Harvard and Lehigh in Rounds 1 and 2 respectively. In the quarterfinals — Villanova completed the comeback 26–21 against #4 Tarleton State.
Villanova fought their way to a 10–3 halftime advantage and went into the 4th quarter up 13–6 — including a Ja’briel Mace twenty-yard run for a score. But Long Island University capitalized on a turnover and then scored ten unanswered points to take a 16–13 lead. Villanova got the ball back and drove sixty-one yards with under three minutes left to win the game 20–16.
Mace finished the game with 170 yards including 38 on special teams.
