Over 69,000 fans were in attendance for the Commanders and the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon after nearly seven months without an NFL game in Philadelphia. The contest was not a post-AJ Brown era offensive showcase — nor was it rife with exciting turnovers. The Eagles did not route the Commanders. But they did make big plays at key moments — leading to a critical stop on a two-point conversion attempt with one minute and one seconds left — effectively ending the game and giving the Eagles a 24–22 win.
Trailing 3–0 in the first quarter — the Eagles answered when Jalen Hurts found Dontayvion Wicks for a 64-yard gain. Hurts then connected with Dallas Goedert in the endzone for Philadelphia’s first lead. After a 42-yard Saquon Barkley run — Jalen Hurts found Dontayvion Wicks for another Eagles score.
The Commanders then put together a drive of their own — when Washington running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt dove into the endzone from one yard out. The subsequent extra point was blocked by Jalen Carter.
After a Jake Elliott field goal — the Commanders found the endzone when Jayden Daniels connected with Stephon Diggs across the middle for a score. The Eagles answered with a 43-yard touchdown completion from Hurts to Dallas Goedert made the score 24–16 Eagles. But the Commanders then went on a drive of their own culminating with a one-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Croskey-Merritt connection pulling within two points at 24–22. But the ensuring two-point conversion attempt was unsucessful when a screen-play was sniffed out and stopped by the Eagles.
The Eagles secured the win when Devonta Smith recovered the onside kick.
Saquon Barkley finished the game with 83 yards rushing. Dallas Goedert hauled in four passes for seventy-seven yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Hurts threw for 203 yards and three scores.
Although the game was turnover free — three plays thwarted the Commanders. Two kicks were missed — one was blocked by Jalen Carter and one missed field goal. The other — a fifteen yard penalty on Stephon Diggs for jumping on the goal post that prevented the Commanders from trying a two-point conversion that could have potentially tied the game in the fourth quarter.
