On 26 August, catastrophic floods swept through parts of Nepal, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing as swollen rivers tore through communities.
The floodwaters surged through the Trishuli and Narayani river systems before entering India as the Gandak. As the Himalayan disaster moved towards Bihar, the state faced the threat of a massive influx of water.
At Valmikinagar, however, engineers had a crucial piece of infrastructure on their side: the 57-year-old Gandak Barrage.
As the flood surge intensified, engineers opened all 36 gates of the barrage, releasing nearly 1.5 lakh cusecs of water in a controlled manner. The aim was to manage the enormous volume of water flowing downstream and prevent an even more destructive surge from overwhelming the region.
The intervention did come at a cost.
Low-lying areas of West Champaran were flooded, agricultural fields went underwater, and families had to be evacuated from vulnerable areas. But the barrage helped regulate the incoming water at a critical moment, potentially reducing the impact of the Himalayan flood surge on downstream communities.
Without such regulation, an unchecked surge could have inundated larger stretches of Bihar, damaged vast areas of farmland and deposited huge quantities of Himalayan silt across the plains. Communities in vulnerable areas would also have had far less time to respond.
Built to manage the worst
The Gandak Barrage was constructed as part of the 1959 Gandak Agreement between India and Nepal, with the broader Gandak river system being developed to regulate water and support irrigation across the region.
Located at Valmikinagar in West Champaran, the barrage has spent decades controlling the flow of one of the major rivers entering Bihar from the Himalayan region.
Its importance becomes particularly evident during extreme weather events, when enormous volumes of water can move rapidly from the mountains into the plains.
More than half a century after it was built, the barrage once again became a critical line of defence when a Himalayan flood disaster reached India’s doorstep.
For the communities downstream, it was a reminder that infrastructure built decades ago can play a crucial role when nature unleashes its most powerful forces.
At Valmikinagar, 36 gates opened against the flood — helping engineers manage a surge that began hundreds of kilometres away in the mountains.
