UAE Tightens Checks on Investor and Freelance Visas: What Changed in 2026

Freelance and investor visas in the UAE are not harder to get in 2026 — but they are checked much more carefully. After finding cases where visas were misused instead of used for real freelance work, authorities now look closer at documents, work history, and proof that the freelance activity is genuine.

Why the change happened
The main reason is growth. Freelance licenses issued in the UAE jumped 261 percent in the first quarter of 2026 compared with last year. New economic licenses also rose 21 percent, and active licenses grew 12 percent overall. When a visa category grows this fast, authorities usually raise their checks to keep the system reliable.
Dubai’s GDRFA has also confirmed that freelance visas were never suspended, despite online rumors. Applications still move through the same process — the difference is how closely they’re reviewed.
What is being checked more closely

  • Golden Visa applications. For salary-based Golden Visa routes, applicants now need a basic salary of at least AED 30,000 per month. Moreover , new requirement is for manager to work in the company for more than 2 years and for company to have more than 10 employees.
  • Freelance and Green Visa applications. A permit alone is no longer enough. Applicants need real proof of client work, income, and a genuine freelance history.
  • Investor visa
Now in order to renew investor/partner visa as an owner of the company applicant needs to show proof of transferred share capital as well as 6 months corporate bank statement.
  • Tax rules for freelancers. Freelancers earning over AED 1 million a year must register for corporate tax within 30 days.
    What this means in practice
The visa categories themselves are still open, and the process is moving further online. But there’s less room for missing or inconsistent paperwork. What used to pass with a light document set two years ago may now trigger extra questions or delays.
The safest move for anyone applying this year : get a professional team who will be able to take care of preparation of full documentation from the start — income proof, attested certificates, and a clear professional history — instead of gathering it piece by piece after a request comes in.
Moreover , RBN international team is constantly checking what’s new and what’s changing in order to make sure you are not breaking any rules.
