Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson have a crucial game against the Bills that could determine who will be the starting quarterback.
The Cleveland Browns will continue their quarterback battle in their second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, and Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are trying to win the starting job. In this game, Sanders will be getting the start for the first half, and Watson will start in the second half, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
“For Shedeur Sanders’ start today vs. Bills, the Browns will rest some starters but not all. LT Spencer Fano and WR Denzel Boston will play, I’m told. Browns consider today a crucial data point in QB battle. Deshaun Watson takes over in third quarter,” Fowler wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
In the first preseason game, Watson got the start, and it felt like he made the best case for himself in taking a lead in the battle. Now, the hope for Sanders is that he can put on a good showing in his start to give himself a chance.
Head coach Todd Monken noted that he doesn’t expect the decision to go past early next week, which means that this game will be important for both quarterbacks.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently gave his prediction on what he thinks will happen with the quarterback battle, and there could be a scenario where both Sanders and Watson play due to certain circumstances.
“Watson opens the season as the starter, the team loses a lot of games, and Sanders takes over at some point,” Dan Graziano wrote. “The Browns finish with one of the worst records in the league. And neither of these guys is in the mix to be their 2027 starter. Armed with two first-round picks, the Browns secure one of the top quarterbacks in the draft. And reset once again at the position, hoping they’ve finally found their long-term answer.”
The Browns are probably hoping that scenario doesn’t happen, but it’s very possible.
