Browns’ Shedeur Sanders still has hopes of starting this year, but Buffalo defensive back demeans the quarterback at joint practice
The Cleveland Browns are now in the hands of first-year head coach Todd Monken. He is hoping to turn the Browns into a team that finally starts winning on a consistent basis and can compete for the NFC North title. The Bronws have been left as bottom feeders in the division for many years as they have been unable to get the best of the Ravens, Bengals or Steelers on an every-year basis.
If the Browns are going to start to climb out of their long-standing hole this season, it starts with Monken making the correct decision about the starting quarterback position. Officially, it is a battle between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Most observers believe that Monken will hand the job to Watson, a situation that he has hinted at but not made official yet.
However, even though it looks like the job will belong to Watson, Sanders is scheduled to get the start this weekend against the Buffalo Bills. Sanders has also seen action in the joint practices with the Bills, and Buffalo safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson decided to harass the quarterback from the sidelines — even though he was not participating in practice.
Gardner-Johnson did not like the short-pass option Sanders was taking on a regular basis. He said Sanders was the “check-down King.”
Watson has overcome shoulder and Achilles injuries as well as off-the-field issues that have marred his career. He is in the fifth and final year of a 5-year contract he signed with the Browns. Sanders, a fifth-round draft choice in 2025, completed 120 of 212 passes last year for 1,400 yards with 10 TDs and 10 interceptions last season.
