Each year, the monsoon transforms large parts of Assam into a landscape of swollen rivers and submerged settlements. This season has been no different. Relentless rains and overflowing rivers have inundated villages, damaged homes and infrastructure, displaced thousands of people, and disrupted daily life across several districts.
Beyond the human toll, the floods have also wreaked havoc on wildlife and livestock. Animals have been swept away by strong currents, while many have struggled to find food and shelter as vast stretches of land disappeared underwater.
Yet even after the waters begin to recede, another crisis emerges: access to safe drinking water.
A hidden crisis after the floodwaters rise
Floodwaters frequently contaminate wells, ponds and community water sources with sewage, waste and other pollutants, creating ideal conditions for water-borne diseases. For families cut off from regular supplies, securing clean drinking water can become a daily challenge.
Amid these difficult conditions, a promising solution has emerged from neighbouring Tripura. InstaWater, a startup incubated at Tripura University, is using its patented mobile water purification technology to bring safe drinking water directly to flood-affected communities in Assam.

The initiative demonstrates how locally developed innovation can play a vital role in disaster response, helping communities meet one of their most basic and urgent needs when conventional supply chains are disrupted.
Bringing clean water directly to affected families
Tripura University-backed startup InstaWater has been using its patented mobile water purification technology to support flood-hit communities in Assam. Recently, the team reached Amguri in Assam and supplied more than 2,000 litres of purified drinking water to around 30 affected families.
What makes the initiative notable is its ability to treat contaminated floodwater on-site. Instead of transporting large quantities of bottled water to remote locations, the portable purification system converts unsafe water into clean drinking water where it is needed most.
The effort was led by InstaWater founder Prof Harjeet Nath, along with M Tech student Ashim and technician Santanu. Their mobile unit travelled to flood-affected villages and produced safe drinking water directly from available water sources, ensuring immediate access for residents facing severe shortages.

By providing clean water at the point of need, the technology not only addresses a basic humanitarian requirement but also helps reduce the risk of disease outbreaks that often follow floods. The initiative demonstrates how locally developed solutions can complement conventional relief measures and strengthen disaster response in difficult conditions.
