A weapon fell from the boy’s waistband during a brief struggle with officers, Boston police said.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with what police described as a “brazen” shooting during the Puerto Rican Festival in Roxbury on Saturday evening.
Several gunshots erupted from inside Franklin Park near Playstead Road shortly before 8 p.m., the Boston Police Department said in an announcement.
As a large crowd started scattering from the area, officers noted a person running away towards Seaver Street while grabbing his waistband and repeatedly glancing upward, police said.
While police tried to detain him, a gun allegedly fell from the person’s waistband, the department said. Investigators identified the recovered firearm as an I.J. Target Sealed 8 Revolver, which contained three live rounds and four discharged casings within its cylinder, according to Boston police.
The person, a 15-year-old boy from Roxbury, was arrested. Police did not disclose his identity because of his age.
Police said other officers at the scene reported that the boy emerged from bushes near the Giraffe Entrance next to Playstead Road, where he fired multiple shots into the air. He then allegedly made eye contact with the officers, fired an additional round, and fled the park toward Seaver Street, where he was ultimately apprehended.
The teen is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and resisting arrest. He is also charged with four counts of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, police said.
Authorities said he will be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court.
