Jahmai Jones hasn’t been in Boston very long, but he’s making quite the first impression.
On Saturday evening, in just his second plate appearance as a member of the Red Sox, Jones launched his first home run for the club. It was a fitting way to debut himself to the hometown crowd at Fenway Park, sending one soaring over the Green Monster to tie things up 2-2 in Boston.
Jones was brought over to the Red Sox via trade. He’ll likely be a depth and utility option, but given Boston played 3 games in just over 24 hours, it needed all hands on deck for the weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Jones detailed the value of that moment after the game.
“To be able to do that here with this team, with how they’re playing, it’s awesome,” Jones told reporters. “It’s a great feeling to continue to pass the baton along and continue to play the brand of baseball that they’re playing.
“It’s a great feeling to have that crowd behind you.”
Jones has been in the MLB since 2020, but it’s been a bit of a rocky road for the outfielder. In 2026, he struggled mightily with the Tigers before being sent to Boston. His batting average is a lowly .135, and he only registered 7 RBIs all season prior to Saturday.
Perhaps a fresh start is all Jones needed to get back on track with his major league career. He showed plenty of promise with the Tigers in 2025, batting .287 with 23 RBIs and seven home runs.
Jones also gives Boston some help facing southpaw pitchers. All 11 of his career home runs in the MLB have come off lefties.
No matter what his future holds in Boston though, he already has one special moment with the Fenway faithful to hang his hat on.
