The Los Angeles Rams paid a steep price for Myles Garrett in the blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns, but they’re hoping it will be worth the risk in the end. Trading for Garrett is the kind of win-now move that the Rams have become known for, and the kind of swing that helped them win Super Bowl LVI.
In return for the best defensive player in the league currently, the Rams gave up young star Jared Verse along with a first-round pick and a few more day two picks.
One would think that, for a player as good as Garrett, there would be a lot of competition for him on the trade market if other teams knew that the Browns were shopping him. That reportedly wasn’t the case here, as the Rams were really the only team seriously inquiring about a deal, per ESPN.
“The Rams figured they would have competition for Garrett, but multiple Browns sources insist this trade was Rams-specific and no other suitors reached a serious threshold,” numerous ESPN insiders reported.
Despite having almost no competition, the Rams were still forced to give up a massive haul for Garrett. That makes sense considering Garrett just broke the single-season sack record in 2025, but Cleveland still did well to get such a big return even with nobody else bidding.
Garrett previously requested a trade from the Browns after the 2024 season, but that went away when he was given a massive new contract extension in the spring of 2025. The Rams will now be on the hook for that deal that runs through 2030.
Los Angeles is operating on a limited timeline with Matthew Stafford’s career winding down, so it came as no surprise to see them go all-in on a player like Garrett. Adding the future Hall of Famer to the defensive line gives the Rams arguably the best defense in football to go along with what might already be the best offense in the league. As a result, Sean McVay and company will be very tough to beat one year after making it to the NFC title game.
