Dubai school athletes close out May finals

Dubai Sports Council has wrapped up the May finals of the MIDEA Dubai Schools Games, with pupils competing across volleyball, padel, judo and jiu-jitsu.

The month’s events brought together students from public and private schools across Dubai. The programme is now one of the city’s main school sport competitions and continues to give young athletes a route into more regular competition.

Volleyball drew the biggest numbers. A total of 744 pupils from 62 teams played over four days at Al Wasl Club’s indoor arena.

Credence High School A won the Under-13 boys’ title. Dubai British School Emirates Hills took the Under-13 girls’ title.

At Under-15 level, Deira International School won the boys’ competition. GEMS International School won the girls’ title.

GEMS International School also won the Under-17 boys’ competition. Dubai British School Emirates Hills added another title in the Under-17 girls’ event.

Padel also formed part of the May schedule, with 94 students from 47 schools taking part.

GEMS World Academy and King’s School Al Barsha won the Under-12 boys’ category.

Al Ittihad Private School Jumeira had a strong Under-14 boys’ event, taking first and second place.

In the Under-16 boys’ category, King’s School Al Barsha and GEMS Dubai American Academy claimed the title. Emirates International School Meadows won the Under-16 girls’ competition.

The judo and jiu-jitsu events were held at GEMS School of Research and Innovation.

Judo featured 72 competitors across Under-13 and Under-15 boys’ and girls’ weight divisions. Credence High School and GEMS New Millennium School took several gold medals and podium places.

In jiu-jitsu, pupils from 18 schools competed across several divisions. GEMS Metropole School earned first-place finishes in the Under-18 White Belt 69kg category and the Under-18 Blue Belt 73kg and 85kg divisions.

GEMS International School Al Khail also won gold in the Under-16 White Belt 73kg category.

For local sports clubs, the competition also offers a useful look at young athletes who may be ready for the next step.
