The Cleveland Browns have an interesting quarterback situation this season, to say the least. Head coach Todd Monken needs to choose from one of Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, or Dillon Gabriel to play as his starter under center. However, Monken’s latest comments have fans thinking Gabriel might already be out of the race.
On Wednesday, the 60-year-old head coach stated that he and the Browns have two starting quarterbacks on the roster, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. Monken did not provide any names. So, the possible shot taken at Gabriel is complete speculation.
“We got two starting-level quarterbacks,” said Monken.
The Browns have four quarterbacks on the roster right now. Watson, Sanders, and Gabriel were on the team last season, while the front office selected Arkansas Razorbacks star Taylen Green in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. While Monken didn’t specifically name which two quarterbacks he was referring to in his comments, Watson is the most experienced, while Sanders is the fan favorite for the starting job.
That kind of leaves Dillon Gabriel in a position to work as a backup option alongside Taylen Green. However, it is still early in the offseason, and training camp could certainly change things in the quarterback room.
Even so, Gabriel, who is 25 years old, didn’t do anything to seperate himself as the obvious starter for the Browns last season. He appeared in 10 games in the 2025-26 campaign, starting in six, and recorded just 937 yards for seven touchdowns while completing 59.5% of his pass attempts. Gabriel only turned the ball over twice, but was less than efficient when commanding the huddle.
Todd Monken will likely continue evaluating the quarterback position in Cleveland and will have a more thorough look at the group come training camp. But in the early portion of OTAs, it appears he’s already narrowing it down to two players.
