Why Jared Verse isn’t trying to fill Myles Garrett’s shoes

The Cleveland Browns recently shook up the NFL world when they traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a package centered around Jared Verse and draft compensation. While Verse might not be the same player as Garrett, he still gives Cleveland an impressive young star to build around for the future on defense.

Recently, Verse spoke on why he is not feeling pressure to replicate what Garrett accomplished in Cleveland.

“Myles is a great player. I watch his film every day… I’m not here to fill his shoes. That’s not my job. That’s not in my description… my job is to be the best me. If I’m the best me, I’m not going to be Myles Garrett… I’m going to be the best Jared, and that’s going to be the best player in the league,” said Verse, per Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan on X, formerly Twitter.

It’s a refreshing mindset to have for Verse, who had established himself as a rising star on the Rams’ defensive line over the last couple of seasons, and will now join a Browns team that is in full rebuild mode, having hired Todd Monken to replace Kevin Stefanski as their head coach this offseason.

The Browns have a major question to answer at the quarterback position, as no starter has been announced between Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and Deshaun Watson.

Perhaps Cleveland will lose enough this year to secure a premium draft pick in what is expected to be a quarterback-rich 2027 class.

In any case, the Browns’ 2026 season is slated to get underway in early September.
