St Raphael’s turns maths into an adventure with free “Amazing Maths Race” for families in Parkside

Forget worksheets and quiet classrooms, at St Raphael’s, maths is about to get loud, lively and a little competitive in Parkside.

This June, St Raphael’s School is throwing open its gates to the public for The Amazing Maths Race, a free, family-friendly event that transforms the school into an interactive maths adventure course designed for children from kindy to Year 6 and their grown-ups.

Running on Thursday, June 11th from 6:30pm to 8pm, the event invites families to team up with a maths leader and take on six challenge stations, exploring real-world concepts like measurement, geometry, data, patterns, probability and problem-solving.

Unlike what you might expect, there will be no sitting still or silent number crunching. This is maths in motion, built around teamwork, movement, and the kind of everyday numeracy people use every day.

From cooking and shopping to sport, travel and decision-making, organisers say the goal is to show that maths is already part of daily life, and that confidence, not perfection, is what really matters.

“The Maths Movement is about helping children and families see that maths is everywhere,” said Emma Fowler, Principal of St Raphael’s School. “When people experience maths through real life situations, through movement, problem solving, teamwork and play, they begin to understand that everyone can develop confidence with numeracy.”

The initiative is part of St Raphael’s broader Maths Movement program, which is challenging the idea that people are either good or bad at maths, instead reframing numeracy as a skill everyone can build through curiosity and practice.

Importantly, organisers are encouraging all families to attend, even those who may feel unsure about maths themselves. The event is designed to be inclusive and welcoming, helping parents and carers build confidence alongside their children while fostering positive conversations about learning at home.

At the end of the night, participants will take home a Maths in Action booklet, packed with ideas to continue the learning at home, along with themed prizes to celebrate their efforts.

The Amazing Maths Race is also part of a wider week-long learning program at the school, but the free public event is open to the broader Adelaide community, not just enrolled families.

With registrations now open, organisers are encouraging families to get in early, assemble their teams and secure a spot for an evening that promises energy, laughter and a fresh perspective on numbers.
