SA’s high-tech schools are back open for enrolments, and students are lining up to get job-ready

South Australian students looking to get a head start on their future careers have a new opportunity, with applications now open for the state’s sought-after technical colleges.

With campuses at Findon, Modbury Heights, Tonsley, Port Augusta and the Limestone Coast, the colleges are quickly becoming one of the most popular pathways for students in Years 10 to 12 looking to combine classroom learning with real-world industry experience.

Designed to fast-track students into careers in high-demand sectors, the program combines hands-on training with school study, allowing graduates to leave with their SACE while also completing valuable VET qualifications.

And the demand is real. More than 1,000 students are already enrolled across the state, building a strong pipeline of skilled workers to support South Australia’s growing defence, infrastructure and housing industries.

For families wondering about what’s on offer, a series of open nights will be held later this month at the Findon, Tonsley and Modbury Heights campuses.

The first cohort of students to graduate last year from the Findon campus have already moved into full-time employment, apprenticeships and further study, proving the model is more than just a classroom alternative, it’s a direct line into the workforce.

The colleges are part of a broader push to strengthen South Australia’s skills pipeline, particularly as major projects and initiatives like AUKUS ramp up demand for a highly trained local workforce. Since 2021, the number of apprentices and trainees in training across the state has climbed significantly, with technical colleges playing a key role in that growth.

Three additional technical colleges are also already in the works for Murray Bridge, Gawler and Marden, forming part of a $150 million commitment to expand access and opportunities across the state.

For students who don’t see themselves following a traditional academic pathway, or who simply want to get a head start in their chosen industry, these colleges are quickly becoming a go-to option.

Applications for metropolitan campuses are open throughout Term 2 and will be processed in Term 3, while regional students can apply through their current school.

With a clear focus on practical skills, industry connections and real career outcomes, South Australia’s technical colleges are shaping up to be one of the smartest moves a student can make before finishing school.
