The UAE athletics team reached five medals by the end of the third day at the 21st Arab U20 Athletics Championship in Tunisia.

The national team now has one gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the event.

Al Yazia Tarek added to the tally with bronze in the women’s javelin. She threw 32.79 metres to finish third.

There was also a notable result in the hammer throw. Mohammed Adel Al Ali finished fourth with 61.47m, missing bronze by just two centimetres.

His throw set a new UAE national record, beating the previous mark of 60.40m, which had stood since 2006.

Sara Fahad finished fifth in the 400m hurdles. Al Yazia also placed fifth in another event, while Rashed came sixth in the pole vault final.

Ali Ghazwan, the UAE team manager, said the athletes had shown they could compete strongly at this level despite their age.

He also pointed to Al Ali’s hammer throw record as one of the main performances of the championship so far, with the teenager breaking a mark that had stood for 20 years.
