Vietnam’s President To Lam is set to make New Delhi his first major foreign stop after taking office, with a BrahMos missile deal likely to be a key outcome. If finalised, Vietnam could become the third Southeast Asian nation to induct the Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile.
Sources told India Today that the proposed package includes shore-based BrahMos batteries for coastal defence, along with training, logistics and an initial batch of missiles. Valued at around Rs 5,800 crore, it would be one of Vietnam’s largest defence purchases in recent years, signalling Hanoi’s push to modernise its maritime deterrence in the South China Sea.
Following the Philippines’ deal in 2022 and Indonesia’s ongoing negotiations, Vietnam’s entry would further position BrahMos as a preferred supersonic anti-ship system in Southeast Asia. The agreement would also mark a boost for India’s “Make in India” defence export push.
Moscow has cleared the transfer, underlining continued cooperation between India, Russia and Vietnam despite global supply chain pressures. For Russia, it sustains the BrahMos programme, while for India it reflects growing strategic autonomy in defence diplomacy.
To Lam’s visit is being seen as more than symbolic. With China’s expanding naval presence, Vietnam has been exploring long-range sea-denial capabilities. BrahMos, with its high speed, extended range variants and sea-skimming profile, aligns with Hanoi’s requirement to secure its long coastline and offshore interests.
Beyond the deal, the move highlights India’s emergence as a credible security partner in the Indo-Pacific, with Vietnam’s interest reinforcing the appeal of Indian defence platforms in the region.
