Otaegui makes UAE golf history in Shanghai

Adrián Otaegui produced the best DP World Tour finish by a UAE golfer after taking second place at the Volvo China Open in Shanghai.

The UAE representative finished on 16 under, three shots behind Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, who closed with a 67 to win on 19 under at Shanghai Enhance Anting Golf Club. The result gave Wiesberger his ninth DP World Tour title and his first win on the tour in five years.

Otaegui had put himself in position to win with a third-round 62, which took him to the lead at 16 under. He carried that advantage into Sunday and reached the turn three shots clear.

The back nine changed the shape of the tournament. Wiesberger made three birdies in four holes to close the gap, while Otaegui dropped shots on the way in and found trouble at the last. He signed for a final-round 71 and finished alone in second.

The result still marks a major step for UAE golf. Otaegui earned 389 Race to Dubai points and moved up 20 places to 13th in the standings with 816 points.

It also continues a strong run for the 33-year-old, who finished third in Hainan and sixth at the Joburg Open earlier this season.

Otaegui was selected by the Emirates Golf Federation in late 2024 to represent the UAE as a professional golfer. He has lived in the country for more than 13 years and also works with the national team setup.

His role includes support for player development programmes and the UAE People of Determination golf initiative, which launched in 2021.

Wiesberger’s win moved him to 16th in the Race to Dubai standings with 789 points.

The Volvo China Open was the fourth event in the DP World Tour’s Asian Swing and the 16th tournament of the 2026 season.

The season will finish in the UAE. The top 70 players qualify for the Abu Dhabi Championship at Yas Links from November 5 to 8, before the top 50 advance to the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 12 to 15.
