The Cheap Seats returns tonight on 10 as Australia’s ‘best comedy’ stakes its claim again

The Cheap Seats is back on screens tonight, with Network 10 rolling out the sixth season of the news-based comedy that, in the view of this author, still stands as the best comedy program currently on Australian television.

Fronted once again by Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald, the series leans into the week’s headlines — but not always the ones leading the nightly bulletins. Instead, the duo sift through the more unusual corners of the news cycle, delivering a mix of sharp commentary and offbeat stories.

The show positions itself as an antidote to the heavy news agenda, suggesting there are other stories worth attention beyond the day’s major developments.

Returning alongside the hosts is Mel Tracina, whose role as Cultural Correspondent sees her tackle lighter segments, including updates from the so-called Archipelago of Love Islands.

Previous seasons have featured a mix of political figures and entertainment personalities. Among the highlights cited are an interview with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, an appearance from Reggie Watts, and an on-air moment involving Lynne McGranger. The program also expanded beyond the studio with its first live event, billed as a “World Tour”, albeit limited to a single city appearance.

Looking ahead, the 2026 run is expected to continue that format, with more guest appearances, celebrity segments and red carpet coverage.

While the format remains unchanged, the show’s ongoing appeal lies in its ability to reframe the news cycle through a comedic lens — a formula that continues to resonate with audiences seeking a lighter take on current events.

The Cheap Seats premieres tonight, Tuesday, 21 April at 8.40pm on 10.
