Just as with big wide receivers — some of the finest teams in Eagles history have come with the presence of an elite tight end. The 1960 Eagles had Pete Retzlaff, the 1948–1949 team had (modern day tight end) Pete Pihos, Andy Reid’s Eagles of the early-mid 2000s had Chad Lewis and Brent Celek, Zach Ertz scored the winning touchdown in Super Bowl LII, and Super Bowl LIX and LVII featured Dallas Goedert as one of their offensive weapons.
Last year — amid a disappointing season — Goedert set a franchise record for receiving tight ends. Recently — he’s secured another impressive figure.
For a team just over a year removed from a dominant Super Bowl performance — this Eagles team has a ton of need. One of those needs just got simplified. Dallas Goedert has once again signed a one-year deal this time worth $7 Million deal with the Eagles. Philadelphia also eased the burden by signing Grant Calcaterra and adding Johnny Mundt, Jaheim Bell, and Stone Smartt.
For the last three seasons — Grant Calcaterra has been a reliable second tight end option. A sixth round selection by the Eagles in 2022 — Calcaterra was a former Big 12 and All-ACC selection in college at Oklahoma and SMU respectively. During the former of which he played with Jalen Hurts.
Stone Smartt joins the Eagles after spending time with the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets after being an UDFA also in 2022. In college — he attended Northern Arizona, Old Dominon and Riverside and was a 1st team All-American in 2018. Johnny Mundt brings a veteran presence with the Rams, Vikings, and Jaguars since 2017. The former Oregon Duck also won a Super Bowl with the Rams.
Former Florida State Seminole and South Carolina Jaheim Bell was previously on the Eagles Practice Squad last season. Drafted in the 7th Round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Patriots — he also spent time with the Steelers in 2025 — and is a former Second Team All-ACC.
The moves make draft day a bit easier — where tight end is still a priority for the Eagles. It’s just not a necessity right now.
