Win and You’re In as Philly Delivered
The Philadelphia 76ers not only won Wednesday night with everything on the line, but they also took charge when it counted most.
The Sixers defeated the Orlando Magic 109-97 in a win-or-go-home Play-In game, securing the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. The prize? A meeting with the Boston Celtics in the first round on Sunday in Boston. But moving forward wasn’t the only goal here, as identity was the issue here.
No Embiid, No Problem: A New Identity Emerges
Without Joel Embiid, the expectations were straightforward: this team would struggle to generate offense and control the paint. Instead, the Sixers turned the script.
They emphasized pace, shot creation, and perimeter scoring, playing an entirely different style of basketball than spectators have gotten used to over the years. And for one night, it worked perfectly. Philadelphia did not attempt to replace Embiid. They evolved without him.
Tyrese Maxey Becomes The Guy
This was the moment. Tyrese Maxey finished with 31 points and 6 assists, however the numbers do not accurately reflect his performance. Maxey did more than just lead in the season’s biggest game; he took control. Every time Orlando made threatened, Maxey reacted. Whether attacking downhill, creating space, or controlling tempo late, he appeared to be a playoff-ready player. This was more than just a good game as this was a statement.
The X-Factor Nobody Saw Coming
While Maxey led the attack, freshman VJ Edgecombe had a spectacular effort that completely changed the game. Edgecombe contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds, giving the Sixers the energy, toughness, and physicality they urgently needed without Embiid.
He battled inside, recovered possessions, and produced winning plays all night. Edgecombe played like he belonged in a high-pressure game.
When It Matters Most, Depth Shows Up
The Sixers used balance rather than a single player to win this game.
Kelly Oubre Jr.: 19 points
Paul George: two steals, five assists, and sixteen points
George had a variety of effects on the game, particularly on defense, while Oubre consistently scored goals. Philadelphia is risky due to this. This team becomes far less predictable and much more difficult to stop when numerous players contribute.
Orlando Had Some Responses, But Not Enough
To their credit, the Magic didn’t disappear without a fight.
With 34 points, Desmond Bane led all scorers and kept Orlando within striking distance for the majority of the evening. Early on, the Magic’s size and physicality caused issues, and for extended periods of time, it appeared as though they could seize control. However, Philadelphia performed well and Orlando did not as the game tightened in the fourth quarter. That was the distinction.
Closing Time Defines This Team
Up to the very end, the game was still competitive. The Sixers then turned things around. Maxey controlled the pace, defensive stops became opportunities for transitions, and Philadelphia gradually withdrew. It was a close game that ended in a double-digit victory.
What This Means Moving Forward
With the victory, Philadelphia moves up to the seventh seed and will now play the Boston Celtics in the first round, a matchup full with tension and history. Even though the Celtics will be favored, this performance alters the discourse. Because if the Sixers are able to:
Get this Maxey version.
Keep obtaining output from their depth.
and might include Embiid once more.
They will be more than just a postseason-qualifying squad. No one will want to mess with them.
