For a lot of Aussie women, perimenopause, the natural transitional phase leading to menopause, appears without warning. Whether it’s brain fog during a conversation, restless sleep, or the strange feeling that your body suddenly isn’t working the same way it used to, perimenopause is the kind of thing that creeps up on you. And for many women, the most surprising part isn’t the symptoms themselves, but how little anyone talks about them.
One Adelaide wellness leader is hoping to change the lack of conversation around it through a new collaboration with menopause health company Acro Health. This new collaboration has seen Aleenta Health Club owner, Kylie Roberts, bringing easy-to-understand science-backed information about perimenopause and menopause to more women.
Acro Health was founded by junior doctors Dr Jasmine Beger and Dr Isobel Marshall, who, after watching their own mothers go through perimenopause and menopause with limited support and lots of conflicting advice, were inspired to start something of their own. The duo set out to create a menopause health brand that was based on real science and practical solutions for midlife health.
“Isobel and Jasmine, who are the two founders of Acro, were looking for someone to partner with who has experience in the wellness field,” said Kylie. “I’m also a menopausal woman myself, so having someone involved who has actually experienced it was really helpful.
“At Aleenta Health Club, our target market is women aged 40 plus, so there was just such a beautiful alignment with our messaging and what we say to our clients at Aleenta. It honestly felt like a really natural fit.”
Acro Health is built around helping women approach a new time in their lives with confidence, focusing on evidence-based education, nutrition and training, including the importance of protein intake and resistance exercise. With growing awareness around perimenopause and menopause, the goal for Acro and Aleenta is to remove stigma and replace it with understanding, while empowering women to better support their bodies during this major life transition.
Acro Health is doing this with their new range of plant-based protein powder. The supplement is specifically crafted for women at midlife. “At the moment, the main product Acro sell is a protein powder, but really Acro is a menopause health company,” said Kylie. “They’ve done an amazing job gathering more than 150 testimonials from menopausal women, and that information forms the basis of everything we do. Combined with Jas and Isobel both being doctors, they bring evidence-based knowledge that we can share.
“I think when you’re going through menopause there’s just so much noise out there, and it’s really hard to know what the right advice is. So we want Acro to be that trusted place for women,” she added. “At Aleenta, we’ll stock Acro in the studios, but we’ll also use the knowledge that comes through the brand to share with our members, helping them understand what their bodies need during menopause.”
Kylie says that as women go through menopause and lose oestrogen, they become more at risk of things like osteopenia and osteoporosis, where women’s bones become more fragile, so protein becomes really essential for women during that time.
“Acro is very much about a food-first approach. We’re not about selling supplements just for the sake of it. The reality is that many menopausal women simply don’t get enough protein through their diet. So sometimes you do need to supplement your diet to make sure you’re getting enough protein to support your body.”
As Acro and Aleenta team up, they’re all about continuing to evolve the conversation about women’s health, making sure women don’t have to navigate this stage of life alone.
Acro isn’t the only new thing coming to Aleenta either. Kylie and the team have just launched their sister brand Axis Movement, a performance-based reformer Pilates studio. Find them at Prince Alfred College in Kent Town!
