Trevor Story Made This Decision ‘Five Minutes’ After Red Sox’s 2025 Season Ended

It was first reported on Nov. 4 that shortstop Trevor Story was opting into his contract with the Boston Red Sox, meaning he’ll be with the team at least through the 2027 season.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Friday that the two-time All-Star was ready with the decision nearly one month prior to that when the team’s season ended in the wild-card round against the New York Yankees.

“Alex Cora said Trevor Story had his opt-in decision ready during the postseason,” Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald posted on Bluesky. “‘That was right away. We had that conversation five minutes after the last out in New York. He came into the office, he’s like, ‘I’m in. I ain’t going nowhere.’”

Story is set to earn $25 million the next two seasons and be a free agent after the 2027 campaign.

The 33-year-old was limited to 163 combined contests across his first three seasons in Boston from 2022 to 2024 before matching his career-high with 157 games played in 2025.

Story led the Red Sox in home runs (25), RBIs (96), stolen bases (31), runs scored (91) and hits (161) last season and is projected to hit in the middle of Boston’s batting order again in 2026.
