On Sunday, October 11, the Philadelphia Eagles took a 17-16 lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London with just eight seconds remaining. But as time expired, Cam Little drilled a 57-yard field goal, handing Jacksonville a brutal 19-17 victory.

It was hardly the first time the Eagles have been on the razor’s edge. Over nearly half a century, Philadelphia has pulled off miracle wins and suffered heart-wrenching losses in games that seemed all but locked up.

These eight iconic games prove that a single turnover, return, or kick can rewrite history in the final seconds.

🟢 November 19, 1978: The Miracle of the Meadowlands

The New York Giants led the Eagles 17-12 at Giants Stadium. The game was essentially over, and Philadelphia was out of timeouts. New York had possession and only needed to take a knee to seal the win.

Instead, quarterback Joe Pisarcik attempted a handoff to running back Larry Csonka. The exchange went disastrously wrong: the ball hit Csonka’s hip and popped free. Eagles cornerback Herm Edwards scooped up the fumble and returned it 26 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 20 seconds left. The extra point made it 19-17.

The play, immortalized as the Miracle of the Meadowlands, sparked a 9-7 season under Dick Vermeil, propelling the Eagles to their first playoff berth since 1960.

🔴 September 15, 1997: Four Seconds and a Botched Snap

Trailing the Dallas Cowboys 21-20, Eagles quarterback Ty Detmer orchestrated a late drive, highlighted by a 46-yard strike to Freddie Solomon that set Philly up at the Dallas 4-yard line.

With four seconds left, kicker Chris Boniol lined up for a short, game-winning field goal. But holder Tom Hutton muffed the snap. Boniol never even got the kick off, and Hutton’s desperate run toward the end zone was stopped short by Deion Sanders. Dallas hung on, 21-20.

🔴 October 22, 2006: A Lead That Lasted 33 Seconds

The Eagles trailed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-14 when Donovan McNabb connected with Brian Westbrook on a dramatic 52-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave Philly a 21-20 lead with just 33 seconds remaining.

Tampa Bay managed to push into long-range territory, setting up Matt Bryant for a daunting 62-yard attempt. Bryant nailed the walk-off field goal as time expired to snatch a 23-21 win for the Bucs.

🟢 December 19, 2010: Miracle at the New Meadowlands

After trailing 31-10 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles staged a furious comeback to tie the Giants at 31. With 14 seconds left, New York punter Matt Dodge line-drived a punt toward DeSean Jackson.

Jackson muffed the initial catch, bobbled the ball, gathered himself, and took off. He sliced through the coverage unit for a 65-yard punt return touchdown as the clock hit zero, capping a stunning 38-31 victory. The win put Philadelphia in full control of the NFC East.

🟢 September 24, 2017: One Second and 61 Yards

Tied 24-24 with the Giants at Lincoln Financial Field, Carson Wentz hit Alshon Jeffery along the sideline for a 19-yard gain, leaving one second on the clock.

Rookie kicker Jake Elliott stepped up and drilled a franchise-record 61-yard field goal as time expired for a thrilling 27-24 win, sending the Linc into a frenzy and boosting Philly to 2-1 in their championship season.

🟢 January 6, 2019: The Double Doink

In the NFC Wild Card round at Soldier Field, Nick Foles hit Golden Tate for a touchdown to give Philly a 16-15 lead with 56 seconds left. The Chicago Bears quickly answered, driving into position for a 43-yard attempt by Cody Parkey with 10 seconds remaining.

Eagles defensive lineman Treyvon Hester got a fingertip on the ball, altering its path. The kick struck the left upright, bounced off the crossbar, and fell harmlessly into the end zone. The Double Doink secured the 16-15 victory and sent the Eagles to the Divisional Round.

🔴 September 16, 2024: A Late Drop Opens the Door

Leading the Atlanta Falcons 18-15 under two minutes, the Eagles needed one first down to seal the game. On third-and-3, Jalen Hurts threw a quick pass to Saquon Barkley, but the running back dropped the open throw.

The clock stopped, forcing an Elliott field goal to push the lead to 21-15. That left Kirk Cousins with 1:39 to work with. Cousins marched Atlanta 70 yards, hitting Drake London for a seven-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left. Younghoe Koo’s extra point secured a 22-21 Falcons win after a late Hurts interception sealed Philly’s fate.

🔴 October 11, 2026: Heartbreak in London

Trailing 16-14 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jake Elliott hit a 48-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to give Philadelphia a 17-16 edge.

Disaster struck on the ensuing kickoff, as Ameer Abdullah ripped off a 53-yard return to the Eagles’ 39-yard line with one second left. Cam Little stepped out and drilled a 57-yarder as time expired to seal Jacksonville’s 19-17 victory.

Across half a century, the Eagles are 4-4 in these tight thrillers—a testament to how razor-thin the margins are in the NFL.

With Lane Johnson retired, Cam Jurgens traded to Baltimore, and Jalen Hurts ruled out against Carolina due to a superficial blood clot in his leg, Philadelphia faces plenty of adversity heading into Week 6. But if history proves anything, it’s that in this league, a game is never over until the final second ticks off the clock.
