Travelling between the UAE’s emirates by train is becoming easier, and it can also be a smart way to keep your travel costs under control.
With Etihad Rail, passengers can now travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just over an hour, while the expanding passenger network is connecting more destinations across the country. Comfort Class fares on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi route start from Dhs39, but the final cost of a journey can depend on when and how you book.
There is also more to consider than the price of the train ticket. Getting to the station, continuing your journey after arrival and choosing the right fare can all affect your total spending.
If you are planning to travel on the UAE’s national railway, these Etihad Rail travel tips can help you make your journey more budget-friendly.
1. Book your ticket online
One of the easiest ways to save is to book through the Etihad Rail website or app rather than simply turning up at the station.
The digital channels offer access to the wider range of fares, including Saver fares, while ticket vending machines provide walk-up fares and do not offer Saver tickets.
For travellers with fixed plans, the Saver fare can be particularly useful because it is designed for passengers who do not need the flexibility to change their booking.
Just make sure your plans are firm before choosing it. Saver tickets cannot be changed or refunded.
2. Compare different departure times
If your schedule is flexible, do not automatically book the first train you see.
Etihad Rail fares can differ between services, so checking several departure times before completing your booking could reveal a cheaper option.
For example, current Dubai-Abu Dhabi fares start from Dhs39 in Comfort Class, while Premium Class starts from Dhs109.
The exact price can vary by service and fare type, so it is worth spending an extra minute comparing the available options.
This is particularly useful if you are planning a leisure trip rather than travelling at a fixed time for work.
3. Choose the right fare type
Picking the cheapest ticket is not always about finding the lowest headline price. It is also about choosing a fare that matches your plans.
Etihad Rail currently offers three fare types across Comfort and Premium classes:
- Saver: No changes or refunds; seat selection is charged separately.
- Value: Changes are allowed under the applicable conditions, with complimentary seat selection.
- Flex: Offers the greatest flexibility, including refunds subject to the applicable cancellation rules.
If you know exactly when you are travelling, Saver can keep the price down.
If there is a reasonable chance your plans will change, paying more for Value or Flex could make more sense than buying a cheaper ticket and potentially losing the fare later.
4. Take advantage of child and senior fares
Travelling with family? Check the discounted fares before you book.
Children aged 0 to 17 receive a 50 per cent discount on Etihad Rail fares, while children under two can travel free when seated on an accompanying adult’s lap.
There is also a 20 per cent discount for passengers aged 60 and above, available to UAE nationals and expatriates.
For a family travelling together, these concessions can make a noticeable difference to the overall cost of a return journey.
Remember to carry valid proof of age if you are travelling on a discounted fare, as Etihad Rail may request identification.
5. Skip the taxi to Dubai’s station
Your train ticket does not have to be followed by a taxi bill.
Dubai’s Al Yalayis Station is connected to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station on the Dubai Metro’s Red Line by a dedicated pedestrian bridge. That means passengers can use the Metro for part of their journey rather than paying for a taxi all the way to the station.
RTA bus services also connect the surrounding area, so it is worth checking the public transport journey planner before leaving home.
For a solo traveller or a couple, replacing a taxi with public transport can make a particularly noticeable difference to the total cost of the trip.
6. Combine Etihad Rail with public transport
The savings do not have to stop once you leave the train.
In Abu Dhabi, Etihad Rail operates shuttle services from Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station towards destinations including ADNOC Headquarters, ADNEC Centre and Reem Mall. The shuttle costs Dhs10 and can be added when booking your train journey.
In Dubai, passengers can also add an RTA nol One-Day Pass to their Etihad Rail booking. The pass provides unlimited travel on eligible Metro, Tram and bus services for the day it is activated. Etihad Rail says the train ticket and Nol pass can be accessed through the same QR code.
That can be considerably more convenient than arranging separate taxis for every stage of your journey.
Comfort or Premium: which should you choose?
If saving money is your priority, Comfort Class is the natural starting point.
You still get comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, power and USB charging, while food and drinks are available to purchase onboard. Premium Class adds wider seats, more legroom and complimentary beverages and snacks.
For a relatively short journey such as Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Comfort Class may be all you need.
Premium could make more sense if you value extra space or the additional onboard service and are happy to pay more for the experience.
Plan the whole journey, not just the train
One of the biggest mistakes when trying to travel cheaply is looking only at the train fare.
A Dhs39 ticket sounds inexpensive, but the total cost can rise quickly if you then need taxis to and from both stations.
Instead, look at your journey from door to door.
Check the train fare, Metro or bus connections, Etihad Rail shuttle options and any day passes before booking. The cheapest overall journey may not always involve the absolute cheapest train ticket.
Make your Etihad Rail journey more affordable
Etihad Rail is making inter-emirate travel a new part of everyday life in the UAE, and there are several ways to keep the cost manageable.
Book digitally, compare departure times, choose the fare that suits your plans, use available concessions and connect with public transport wherever possible.
Most importantly, look at the complete journey rather than just the ticket price.
With a little planning, your next UAE train adventure can be comfortable, convenient and easier on the wallet too.
