Why Retired NRIs Are Returning to This Indian Village?
In one Gujarat village, almost everyone is above 60. Yet nobody has to worry about cooking alone, getting to the hospital during an emergency, or eating dinner by themselves.
This is Chandanki in Mehsana district, Gujarat. With many younger people living in cities or abroad, elderly residents returning home found themselves facing the everyday challenges of retirement, from cooking and groceries to healthcare and loneliness.
Many returned home after retirement, only to find their children living far away. So the residents of Chandanki began looking after one another, sharing meals, helping with everyday needs and being there during emergencies.
For some retired NRIs, this close-knit community has even become a reason to return to India. In Episode 3 of Solved in India, we explore how Chandanki is tackling loneliness, elderly care and ageing through community living.
