Zoning Board Gives Green Light to Demolish Two South Boston Triple-Deckers

Three South Boston triple-deckers are one step closer to coming down.

The Boston Zoning Board of Appeal voted to overturn demolition delays that had been placed on three Boston properties, clearing the way for their demolition despite efforts to preserve them. The properties include 744 East 4th Street, 595 East 7th Street in South Boston, and 3-4 Folsom Avenue in Mission Hill. 

According to Universal Hub, the delays were originally imposed by the Boston Landmarks Commission, which determined that the buildings warranted a 90-day demolition delay while preservation options were explored. However, property owners appealed those decisions, and the ZBA ultimately sided with them.

The decision has sparked discussion among neighbors and preservation advocates who argue that traditional triple-deckers are an important part of Boston’s architectural character. Others point to the challenges of maintaining older buildings and the need for new housing opportunities in the neighborhood.

With the appeals now approved, demolition permits can move forward, paving the way for whatever comes next on the sites.
