Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay on Sunday remembered the 41 people who died in the Karur stampede a year ago, saying the tragedy remains “a wound that does not heal” and “a pain that does not fade.”
Marking the first anniversary of the September 27, 2025 tragedy, Vijay said the day remained etched in the lives of the victims’ families, his supporters and the wider TVK family. He said those mourning the deaths continued to carry an “unspeakable grief.”
“Last year. This same day. That is, September 27, 2025,” Vijay said in a post on X, recalling the day the stampede occurred during a TVK rally in Karur.
He described the tragedy as a “sorrowful event” that had left a lasting wound in the lives of the victims’ relatives and the party’s supporters.
“To us, grieving the loss of the relations we carried in our hearts, we ourselves will be comfort, support, and refuge,” Vijay said, adding that the victims continued to live on in memory.
He ended his message with a tribute to those who died in the stampede, saying, “Our heartfelt tribute to all the relations who live on in memory.”
WHAT HAPPENED IN KARUR?
The Karur stampede took place on September 27, 2025, during a TVK political rally at Veluswamypuram in Karur district, where a massive crowd had gathered for Vijay’s address. A crowd surge turned deadly, killing 41 people and injuring dozens of others.
The incident led to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The Tamil Nadu government initially constituted a Special Investigation Team, but the Supreme Court later transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation, saying the incident warranted an independent and impartial investigation.
The CBI has since examined aspects including permissions granted for the event, crowd-management measures, police deployment and the emergency response. Several TVK functionaries have also been questioned by the agency.
The CBI later summoned Vijay to appear before the agency in connection with the case.
