Willson Contreras rides highs and lows of Red Sox win over Yankees

Within a three-inning span, Contreras hit a 2-run homer and also spiked a Gatorade cooler out of frustration in the Red Sox dugout.

Willson Contreras had quite an eventful evening in the Bronx on Friday night.

The ever-intense Red Sox slugger had the highest of highs in the top of the fifth inning, launching a no-doubter 2-run shot into the second deck at Yankee Stadium. He followed that up with an emphatic bat flip in celebration.

But Contreras also showed plenty of emotion the other way after colliding with a fellow Red Sox infielder, Andruw Monasterio, on a routine fly ball in the eighth inning. He trotted back into the dugout screaming, and directed his frustrations at a Gatorade cooler close by.

That version of Contreras is exactly what Boston has needed in 2026: always fired up, whether out of excitement or anger. And the Red Sox have had plenty of both emotions through a rollercoaster of a 2026 season.

Contreras also got Boston on the board earlier in the game with a chopper up the third base line that somehow brought home Jarren Duran with ease. Contreras finished his night 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

I don’t know how this resulted in the Red Sox taking the lead, but thank you Willson Contreras.

Two weeks back, interim manager Chad Tracy sang Contreras’s praises as a leader this season.

“He’s a leader. His work ethic is off the charts,” Tracy said. “He works really hard, but he plays the game hard. He runs the ball down the line, he’s max effort on defense, and obviously what he does in the batter’s box is no secret. So when you see a guy of his caliber that’s been around as long as he has, and for the younger guys to see how hard he plays, it’s an example for everybody.”

Interim manager Chad Tracy spoke on the importance of Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras in the lineup ⭐️⭐️

on Jarren Duran: “Everybody knows what he’s capable of doing… he’s an offensive force when he’s going right.”

Contreras has been as good as expected thus far in 2026. His 13 home runs lead the team, and he’s batting .299, second on the team behind Mickey Gasper, who has far fewer at-bats and is only batting .007 better at .306.

On Friday night, Contreras was integral in the Red Sox getting off to a good start against the Yankees. The rivalry weekend continues on Saturday night, with a 7:35 p.m. first pitch.
