The MBTA announced service changes in August to support tunnel upgrades and ongoing accessibility improvements to the Green Line.

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority announced service changes on the Green Line in August to support tunnel upgrades. Here’s what riders need to know to prepare for the shutdowns.
This weekend, MBTA Green Line service will be suspended on several lines. Service is suspended between between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D branch, Heath Street and North Station on the E branch, and Government Center and Kenmore on the C branch.
Free shuttle buses will replace service on the C and D branches, operating between Kenmore and Back Bay. Riders can connect to the Orange Line at Back Bay for continued service through downtown toward North Station.
A free shuttle bus will also replace B branch service, operating between Babcock Street and Back Bay. The 57 bus service will also be fare-free during this service change.
The 39 bus will replace Green Line E branch service between Heath Street and Back Bay. The route will be fare-free during this service change and extra buses will be added to the 39 to accommodate additional capacity.
From Aug. 8 through 16, the MBTA will suspend Green Line service between Government Center and Babcock Street on the B branch, Government Center and Cleveland Circle on the C Branch, North Station and Kenmore on the D branch, and Heath Street and North Station on the E branch.
Free shuttle buses will replace B branch service between Babcock Street and Back Bay, C branch service between Cleveland Circle and Back Bay, and D branch service between Kenmore and Back Bay. The 39 bus will replace Green Line E branch service between Heath Street and Back Bay.
The MBTA recommends riders using shuttle bus services budget extra travel time, with an estimated 25 minutes added to regular commutes.
Symphony Station on the Green Line E branch remains closed until spring 2029 to advance major accessibility upgrades at the station, officials said. Additionally, as part of accessibility improvements, outbound C branch trains will not stop at Summit Avenue through Aug. 7 and trains in both directions will not stop at Brandon Hall from Aug. 17 to Oct. 4.
During the closures, the MBTA encourages riders to board or disembark at neighboring stations within walking distance.
Riders can find more information on service changes through in-station signage, in-station public announcements, and at mbta.com/PlannedWork. MBTA staff will also be available on-site to offer information and assistance during these service changes, the agency said.
