Starting a newly-released TV series and loving it is something of a Romeo and Juliet situation. You fall so hard, only to be torn away from each other… for a whole year.
Knowing I have to wait another 365 days until I get to watch season two of Widow’s Bay? In the words of Romeo, “There is no world without Verona walls” or in my case Widow’s Bay. Call me dramatic, but dare I say, we have never had a show like this before, from new monsters week after week, to being served some of the wittiest dialogue I have ever devoured.
A lot happened in season one, some of which left us with questions – and please know, if you read any further there will be spoilers – such as ‘Is the island’s curse actually broken?’, ‘What will happen to Tom’s son, now that he’s true final descendant of Richard Warren?’ and most importantly, ‘Can the island’s curse be broken?’.
There’s lots to unravel here, and while we wait at least a year until we get season two of Widow’s Bay, here are our theories and predictions for what’s next.
Season two will keep the ‘monster of the week’ structure
This was such a key part in what made Widow’s Bay season one so interesting and enticing. Every week you knew you were in for something new. But with a lot of the town’s ghosts already aired out, perhaps season two will follow a different ‘monster’ structure – maybe introducing us to more real monsters that live on the island…? After all, each monster reveals deeper history about the island, so it seems crucial this theory stays put. Some Redditors have even theorised that there could be a stylistic change each week. One week found-footage, the next documentary style, or perhaps flashbacks.
Tom becomes the next Richard Warren
A darker prediction, I know. But one that isn’t completely out of the question. Especially given the moral dilemma he faces as the Mayor of the island, but at the same time knowing that his son is the reason the island still gets haunted. It also makes sense that Tom will protect Evan in season two, but he’ll have to do so at the cost of the island. So if history repeats itself, Tom is in the same impossible position that Richard Warren was in once.
Patricia is keeping secrets
A fan favourite. Patricia plays the quiet, introverted yet witty character so well. However, we all know she was the only survivor when her college roommates were murdered by the boogeyman. Outcasted from that event, we can’t help but wonder: why did he spare her? Could she be hiding something, or maybe she is a witch? After all, she remembers the cycles of the curse pretty well, has a deep knowledge of the island, and has connected to the spirits that we haven’t seen yet. Patricia knows something… but what?
The women are the real keepers of the island
This one follows a bit on Patricia’s theory, but all throughout season one the women in every memory or ghost story are all protectors of the island. Rosemary, Patricia, Ruth, Lauren and Sarah all have knowledge that the men don’t. This might mean they are guardians, or have a bigger role coming up in the next season.
The island itself is the entity
This would be an interesting one. Rather than a ghost or demon, the entity that is haunting the island, is actually the island itself. It answers why it is impossible to leave the island, the weather changes, and obviously why the town feels sentient.
