Western Sydney Wanderers sign German Ferreyra on 3-year deal

Western Sydney Wanderers have completed the signing of Championship-winning defender Germán Ferreyra, with the Argentinian centre-back joining the club on a three-year deal.

Ferreyra arrives in Western Sydney after two successful seasons at Melbourne City, where he made 61 appearances across all competitions and played a pivotal role in the club’s 2024/25 Isuzu UTE A-League Championship triumph.

The 31-year-old proved influential at both ends of the pitch during City’s title-winning campaign, scoring a dramatic late winner against Brisbane Roar before netting again in the semi-final victory over Western United to help send City through to the Grand Final.

The experienced defender becomes the latest addition to Ufuk Talay’s squad ahead of the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season, bringing leadership and championship-winning experience to the Wanderers’ backline.

“I hope we can have a competitive season with an improvement on last season and be fighting for the top spot,” Ferreyra said, after putting pen-to-paper on his Wanderers contract.

“It will be difficult, but the squad is preparing really well for the season.

“Members and Fans, I’d like to tell you to come and support the team no matter what because I feel we can achieve great things with you behind us, cheering us on, and never stop believing in us!”

Wanderers Football Director Mal Impiombato said Ferreyra’s winning mentality and leadership qualities made him an important addition to the squad.

“When we look at building our squad, we want players who have experienced success and instil a winning mindset,” Impiombato said.

“Germán is a Championship winner who brings strength, power and a fierce mentality that resonates with our football identity.

“He is a leader on and off the field, and we’re excited to see the impact he can make in the Red & Black.”

Head coach Ufuk Talay believes the Argentine’s experience in high-pressure matches will be a valuable asset for the Wanderers.

“Germán is a player who knows what it takes to win,” new Wanderers boss Talay said, who’s Wanderers side will face off against fierce rivals Sydney FC in Matchweek 1.

“He brings strength, leadership and a real competitive edge to our backline. His experience in big moments and his desire to compete will be important for our group moving forward.”

The Wanderers’ signing of Ferreyra comes after the defender officially departed Melbourne City at the conclusion of his contract, ending a successful spell that delivered Championship glory and established him as one of the competition’s standout central defenders.

Ferreyra is the fifth new signing the Wanderers have made since former Sydney FC boss Talay joined the club.

Youngster Atiya Waraga has been promoted to the first team whilst treble-winner Miguel Di Pizio headed back to Western Sydney after leaving the Central Coast Mariners.

Meanwhile winger Liam Gillion brings title-winning experience to CommBank Stadium after leaving Auckland FC whilst dynamic full-back Panashe Madanha has arrived at the Wanderers from Adelaide United.
