Cars will clear out of a busy stretch of Center City on Sundays this fall, making more room for outdoor dining, shopping and pedestrians.
Open Streets: West Walnut will return Sept. 13 and run for seven consecutive Sundays through Oct. 25. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Walnut Street will be closed to vehicles from Broad to 19th streets, along with 18th Street from Chestnut to Locust streets.
That means pedestrians can take over several blocks normally filled with traffic. Restaurants will be able to extend their outdoor seating into the street, stores can bring shopping outside, and seating areas will be set up along the route.
There also will be live music and family activities throughout the fall. At 18th and Chestnut streets, a rotating activity area will include mini golf, seasonal programming and live broadcasts of Eagles games on select Sundays.
Drivers won’t be entirely shut out of the neighborhood. Sansom, 15th, 16th and 17th streets will remain open to traffic, allowing vehicles to cross the Open Streets route. Road closures will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. each Sunday.
The program started in September 2024 and has since expanded into a recurring event. Center City District says Open Streets now draws an average of more than 10,500 attendees each Sunday.
Open Streets is free to attend and weather permitting.
