UAE reach 20 medals at GCC Games

The UAE’s medal count at the 4th GCC Games in Doha has risen to 20 after athletes added nine medals on the third day of competition.

The Games are being held from May 11 to 22, with the UAE now on three gold, four silver and 13 bronze medals.

The latest medals came in athletics, boxing, fencing and billiards, with boxing accounting for four of the nine podium finishes.

Khaled Alkurdi won silver in the men’s 80kg category. Mohammed Al Junaibi took bronze in the men’s 60kg event, Abdullah Al Shahi claimed bronze in the men’s 76kg category, and Sultan Qasim added another bronze in the men’s 55kg division.

There was also success in athletics, where Fatima Alhosani won gold in the women’s discus throw with a mark of 48.37 metres. Her throw set a new UAE women’s record.

Salma Almarri also reached the podium in the same event, taking bronze with 44.08m and setting a new UAE women’s under-20 record.

In fencing, Alhayam Albalooshi won silver in the women’s foil event, while Zainab Moosa took bronze.

The UAE billiards team added another bronze in the doubles event.

The latest results follow the UAE taekwondo team’s five-medal return earlier in the Games. That haul included two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

“I dedicate this victory to my country and to everyone who supported me throughout my sporting journey.”

Abdulaziz Almheiri, who won gold in the men’s under-68kg taekwondo category, said the backing around the team had played an important role.

“I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the team management and the UAE Olympic Committee for their great support and continued confidence, which helped us secure first place,” Almheiri said.

“This achievement would not have been possible without teamwork, encouragement and the care I received from everyone. I dedicate this victory to my country and to everyone who supported me throughout my sporting journey.”

Maha Rabie, who won silver in the women’s under-57kg taekwondo category, also praised the support staff after her medal.

“I am happy to have won the silver medal and represented the UAE in the best possible way,” Rabie said.

“The competition was strong, and I thank the technical, administrative and medical teams, as well as everyone who supported me. Special thanks go to coach Sanaa for her continued support and encouragement.”

The UAE had already moved to 11 medals earlier in the Games. The latest results take the national team to 20 medals with more competition still to come in Doha.
