More Than Just a Superstar
The Philadelphia 76ers have one of the best rosters in the NBA and hopes to win a championship as they begin the 2026–27 season. Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, LeBron James, and Jaylen Brown complete Philadelphia’s star-powered starting lineup. However, leadership may be more important to the Sixers’ success than individual skill.
While Philadelphia’s newest arrivals have received a lot of attention during the offseason, Maxey has quietly continued to grow into one of the team’s most significant leaders. The 25-year-old guard, who is starting his seventh NBA season, is no longer just a young guy with promise playing alongside seasoned veterans. He is now one of the franchise’s faces.
Maxey’s ability to lead both on and off the court could be crucial to Philadelphia’s success this season, since expectations are higher than ever.
From Rising Star to Franchise Leader
Few could have guessed Maxey’s future significance to the Sixers when they selected him with the 21st overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft. Maxey started off as a supporting player but gradually rose to become one of the NBA’s most potent offensive players.
He averaged a career-high 28.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game during the 2025–26 campaign, earning a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. Philadelphia advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals after finishing 45–37 thanks to his output.
But Maxey’s growth has gone beyond his numbers. Maxey is aware of the difficulties associated with playing in Philadelphia, having gone through several roster changes, postseason setbacks, and times of uncertainty during his career. As the Sixers strive to build rapport with a very different group, that experience might be quite helpful.
Leading a Roster Filled With Superstars
This season, one of Philadelphia’s greatest obstacles will be figuring out how its group of well-known players can coexist. James has over 20 years of professional experience and four NBA titles. Embiid is still one of the best centers in the league, while Brown comes with championship experience from Boston.
It’s not necessary for Maxey to be the loudest voice in the locker room. Rather, he may serve as a crucial link between Philadelphia’s current players and newcomers due to his familiarity with the team and his ties with teammates. Training camp has already shown this influence.
The Philadelphia Inquirer and PhillyVoice have reported that Brown has relied on Maxey while he gets used to his new environment in Philadelphia. Building trust and communication will be crucial for a squad with multiple players used to major offensive duties. That foundation might be established with Maxey’s guidance.
Leadership Goes Beyond Scoring
There has never been doubt about Maxey’s offensive prowess. He is one of the NBA’s most dangerous guards because of his speed, perimeter shooting, and ability to generate scoring opportunities. But generating remarkable numbers is not enough to become a full-fledged leader.
Head coach Nick Nurse emphasized Maxey’s improving defensive communication during training camp. Maxey told reporters on September 30 that while he has always led by example through his work ethic, he has grown more at ease utilizing his voice to assist colleagues in adjusting.
That development is a significant advancement. Philadelphia will need to be consistent, accountable, and willing to make sacrifices on defense throughout the season if they are to win a title. By speaking defensively, sustaining his energy, and leading by example at trying times, Maxey may contribute to setting such expectations. Alongside James and Brown, his ability to impact teammates without controlling every possession might prove especially beneficial.
The 76ers Need Maxey’s Voice More Than Ever
Compared to just trying to make the playoffs, Philadelphia’s championship hopes present a whole different obstacle. Head coach Nick Nurse must create rotations, assign offensive responsibilities, and forge a unified identity with multiple proven talents sharing the court.
Adjustments will probably be part of that process. Maxey might gain from those adjustments as well. James and Brown’s arrival could provide him more chances to play without the ball after he carried a heavy offensive load the previous season.
Maxey may be more productive by targeting defenses that are already preoccupied with Philadelphia’s other offensive threats rather than having to create almost every scoring opportunity himself. His readiness to accept that change would show the kind of leadership the Sixers require.
Championship teams need players that put the team’s success ahead of their own numbers. For Maxey, that is knowing when to take charge offensively and when to give his teammates opportunities. Philadelphia may become much harder to defend if he can successfully manage those obligations while maintaining his reputation as a vocal leader.
Final Thoughts: Maxey’s Next Step Could Define Philadelphia’s Season
The Philadelphia 76ers have made significant investments to put together a team that can contend for an NBA title. But establishing a championship squad involves more than just obtaining excellent players. Throughout the 2026-27 season, developing chemistry, accountability, and a winning culture will all be crucial.
Maxey’s ability to play at an All-NBA level has already been demonstrated. His next task is to show that his impact is not limited to his own work. Maxey doesn’t have to carry Philadelphia alone since James, Brown, and Embiid are with him.
However, he has a chance to contribute to defining this new team’s identity as one of the players with the longest tenure. Maxey’s leadership could be just as important to the Sixers’ chances of winning a title as his scoring.
