It looks like Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter may have let the cat out of the bag about Travis Kelce’s future in the NFL.
Earlier this week, Carter shared a photo on Instagram showing himself alongside the Kansas City Chiefs tight end during a workout session. The caption immediately set the internet alight.
“Andrew and I started with Travis before his rookie year in the NFL. Know the goat is preparing for THE LAST DANCE,” Carter wrote. “Next stop Canton/HOF.”
Carter, who currently serves as Florida Atlantic football’s director of player development, was pictured with Kelce and Andrew Spruill, the star’s longtime personal strength and conditioning coach.

The post has sparked a firestorm of speculation about whether the 2026 season will truly be Kelce’s farewell.
And if this really is the final curtain, what a career it’s been.
Kelce has spent 13 seasons in the league, racking up 11 Pro Bowl selections and three Super Bowl titles along the way. The former third-round pick out of Cincinnati currently sits on more than 13,000 career regular-season receiving yards and 82 touchdowns — numbers that make his Canton credentials pretty much undeniable.
He also holds the record for the most career postseason receptions in NFL history.
Even last season, at 36, Kelce was far from finished. He pulled in 76 catches for 851 yards and five scores — good enough to rank fourth among all tight ends in receiving yards, despite Patrick Mahomes missing the final three games with a devastating ACL injury.

The reaction from fans was swift — and not exactly kind to Carter.
“Can Travis be allowed to announce his own retirement, please? Everything about him makes headlines. Are you saying this for attention?” one supporter fired back. “He’s always said he doesn’t want a farewell tour or the focus to be on him during the season.”
Another fan was clearly emotional about the prospect, writing: “Oh my goodness this just made me start to cry when I read the words the last dance. I hope and pray that Travis has one of the best years he’s ever had as his swan song.”
Others kept it simple and direct.
“Let the athlete handle their own announcements,” one commenter said.
It’s clear plenty of people felt Carter overstepped, regardless of his good intentions.
So why did Kelce come back for one more go?
Speaking on his “New Heights” podcast, the tight end made it clear that Kansas City’s disappointing 2025 campaign left him hungry for more.
“I love playing, I still feel like I could play it at a high level and possibly at a higher level than I did last year…” Kelce said. “I got a bad taste in my mouth on how I ended the year, and how well I was playing, and how accountable I was for the people around me. And I love so many people in Kansas City both in that facility, in the community, and it’s home for me now. I don’t want to leave that life yet.”

The Chiefs’ decade-long streak of playoff appearances ended abruptly in Week 15 last season following a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead.
Off the pitch, Kelce married Taylor Swift on 3 July, capping off a milestone summer.
With Chiefs training camp kicking off on 28 July, Kelce will almost certainly face questions about Carter’s comments — though it’s a safe bet he’ll try to steer the conversation elsewhere.
His contract situation leaves the door open either way. Kelce signed a deal worth up to £15 million for this season, though Newsweek reported it’s structured as a three-year, $57.735 million agreement with clauses allowing him to reassess after each campaign.
Beyond football, Kelce’s future looks bright. His “New Heights” podcast has been a massive hit, and he’s widely expected to be in high demand as a broadcaster. Awful Announcing even suggested he used his wedding guest list to build relationships with the broadcasters he’d most like to work alongside.
Of course, it’s entirely possible Carter simply jumped the gun.
