Tottenham star Richarlison has been left out of the club’s Premier League squad by Roberto de Zerbi and will no longer play in top-flight games for the remaining half of the season.

The Brazilian forward, 29, had been on the verge of a return to former club Everton ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline, but negotiations collapsed before a deal could be completed.

It is understood the north London club informed Richarlison prior to the deadline that he was not part of their plans for the current season.

His departure is now anticipated within the coming days, as transfer windows in both Turkey and Saudi Arabia remain open, providing potential routes out of the club.

Following the side’s 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, manager Roberto de Zerbi addressed the situation directly.

He said: “Richarlison, I don’t know. He said too many times he wants to leave.”

The forward had featured in Tottenham’s season opener against Brentford, starting the game, but was excluded entirely from the squad that faced Newcastle.

De Zerbi had acknowledged earlier in August replacing the striker would prove difficult, feeling that finding another forward of Richarlison’s calibre was no simple task.

Spurs brought in Omar Marmoush on loan from Manchester City, with the Egyptian stepping into the side against Newcastle.

The Brazilian issued a statement earlier in the week, claiming he wants “to be treated with the same respect I’ve always shown Spurs”.

In a lengthy message, Richarlison wrote: “After everything I’ve been through in recent years, I decided that never again would anyone else decide my future for me.

“I endured a lot of hardship during that time, and almost all of it stemmed from decisions made by other people. Pressure, threats, retaliation – none of that scares me. I’ve been through worse… believe me.

“I have always made it clear, at every opportunity, that any move of mine to another club would also have to be good for the team. If it weren’t, I would never have accepted it – just as I didn’t when everything here was falling apart and they needed me. I stayed and gave it my all.

“So, I expect my situation to be treated with the same respect I’ve always shown Spurs and everyone I’ve worked with during this time. Just don’t try to make the decision for me.”

The statement continued: “If they reach an agreement between Spurs and Everton, I will return to my beloved club.

“My intention was to go back to the place where I was very happy, yes, but the negotiations happened only in the way certain people wanted, and it will no longer be like that.

“Despite all this turmoil, I am under contract at Spurs and will remain at the club’s disposal.”

Richarlison’s time at Tottenham began in the summer of 2022, when he arrived from Everton, having previously made the move to Merseyside from Watford four years earlier.

He scored 11 goals in 32 appearances in the league last season.

The player also provided four assists.
