Tiger Woods son follows in dad’s footsteps and qualifies for US Junior Amateur Championship

Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie Woods, has followed in his father’s footsteps and qualified for the US Junior Amateur Championship.

Charlie, 17, made it through by winning a three-for-one play-off at Heathrow Country Club in Lake Mary, Florida.

The top five would advance to the tournament, with Woods tying for fifth with Eric Zhao and Nathan Erickson.

Woods won the play-off, meaning he will play at the US Junior Amateur from July 20-25.

The youngster did not make the cut in the 2024 or 2025 events when his dad was present.

Woods won the competition three times in 1991, 1992 and 1993, becoming the competition’s only ever three-time champion.

Only Jordan Spieth came closest, winning twice in 2009 and 2011, with no other player being a two-time champ in the event that began in 1948.

Several notable past winners have played at the event, including Johnny Miller in 1964 and Scottie Scheffler in 2013.

Tiger recently suffered another blow in his long-running battle to return to top-level golf after reports suggested the American icon would miss all four major championships for a second straight season.

The 15-time major winner has not competed in a major since the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2024, with injuries and off-course issues continuing to derail any hopes of a sustained comeback.

Now the 50-year-old’s absence from golf’s biggest events appears set to continue after reports in the United States claimed Woods will not feature at either the US Open or the Open Championship later this summer.

According to veteran golf reporter Bob Harig, Woods is no longer exempt for this month’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills and therefore will not be part of the field.

The golf legend is also believed not to have entered before the deadline for this year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The R&A has yet to officially confirm the final field for the tournament.

This latest setback continues a miserable period for Woods, whose attempts to revive his career have repeatedly been interrupted by injury problems dating back several years.

Woods has not played competitively since undergoing another back operation in October, the seventh surgery of his career.

He also suffered a torn Achilles in March 2025, which ruled him out of last year’s majors and further complicated his recovery plans.

Since the devastating car crash in California in 2021 nearly resulted in the amputation of his right leg, Woods has played only a limited schedule.

Across the eight major championships he has entered since that accident, Woods has missed the cut four times and withdrawn from another event mid-tournament.
