Three individuals lost their lives due to suffocation amid World Cup festivities in Mexico City on Tuesday evening.
The victims were identified as a young woman aged 19, another woman of 48, and a man who was 44 years old, according to the capital’s health authority on Wednesday.
All three were discovered unconscious in the Colonia Juarez district, situated close to the city centre near the iconic Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma.
The landmark had become the focal point for massive crowds celebrating throughout the night.

Their families have since confirmed the identities of all three deceased, with authorities stating that asphyxiation was determined as the cause of death in each case.
The celebrations erupted after Mexico secured a 2-0 triumph against Ecuador, propelling the co-hosts into the last 16 of the tournament.
Goals from Raul Jimenez and Julian Quinones sealed the victory at the Estadio Azteca.
This marked the nation’s first World Cup knockout stage success in four decades, dating back to 1986.
City government estimates suggest more than a million supporters flooded the streets, congregating predominantly around the Angel of Independence.

Paramedics, fire crews and police officers rushed to the Juárez area after reports emerged of unconscious individuals following the match.
Despite administering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene, emergency teams were unable to save the three victims, who were subsequently pronounced dead at hospital.
Clara Brugada Molina, who heads Mexico City’s government, conveyed her deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and committed to providing them with full assistance.
“With my heart in my hand, I send my warmest regards and my deepest condolences to his loved ones. We reiterate our call to always celebrate with responsibility, care and empathy,” she wrote on social media.
The city’s health authority confirmed that victims received emergency treatment before being transported to hospital for specialist care.
According to local media reports, celebratory fireworks discharged after the final whistle triggered a brief moment of panic, causing spectators to run and stumble in the packed side streets surrounding the monument.
