These wedding films get us in our feels every time

Whether your wedding is in two weeks or still just a distant day you’re dreaming of, films that centre around that very special occasion always hold a special place in our hearts.

These are the romantic comedies that feel a little too real, striking the right balance of romance, chaos and comedy, and leaving us crying, laughing and smiling. I remember watching Bride Wars with my best friend when we were around 14, convinced that would be us one day (minus the war part, of course). Some of these films revolve entirely around the wedding, while others feature just a fleeting glimpse of vows.

So, whether you’re feeling sentimental or simply in need of a cinematic embrace, we’ve rounded up our favourite wedding films for a little romance, a little drama and a very good time.

Bride Wars

Bride Wars has a space in my heart always. It’s the unapologetic bridal obsession, with Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson turning wedding planning into a competitive sport. Beneath the friendly sabotage, though, is a surprisingly wholesome love story about two best friends.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

This one captures the reality that marrying someone often means marrying the entire family… It’s warm, funny and full of well-meaning, overbearing relatives who turn an intimate occasion into everyone’s business – whether you like it or not.

Crazy Rich Asians

This film isn’t only one of the best wedding films, but the one everyone watches on a flight (I don’t make the rules, sorry). The family politics make it interesting, but visually it’s also one of the most beautiful wedding films you will see.

Father of the Bride

A classic film that shows a wedding through the eyes of a father struggling to let go. Warning, this is a bit of a tearjerker, but it delivers exactly the mix of nostalgia and sentiment one would want from a wedding film.

Bridesmaids

Not all wedding films need to be sappy and romantic. Not only is this one of the best in this genre, but it also might be one of the funniest films out there.

My Best Friends Wedding

What happens when your best friend is jealous of your wedding? Well, nothing great, according to this movie, but Julia Roberts still manages to make every questionable decision compelling.

27 Dresses

Another classic film that shows the exhaustion of always being the person who makes everyone else’s day happen. Romantic, comedic, and relatable – and so satisfying when Jane finally puts herself first.

Mamma Mia!

I need very little convincing when a wedding film offers a Greek island, an ABBA soundtrack, and Meryl Streep in overalls.

The Princess Diaries 2

I love the sheer escapism of  Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries 2, from the palace wardrobe to a royal romance with Chris Pine.

Bridget Jones’s Baby

After two movies – Bridget Jones gets married, and oh how sweet it is to see her finally happy.

A darker addition to the list, this film paints an unsettling portrait of marriage, motherhood and the fear of losing yourself. But nevertheless, it’s one of the best films I have seen.

Another unconventional film to the list, but it does surround a pretty reckless Las Vegas wedding and the chaos that follows.
