The Vogue guide to building a wedding guest capsule wardrobe

Indian weddings do not naturally lend themselves to capsule dressing. There are too many events, too many dress codes and, inevitably, at least one invite that says “Santorini Sundowner.” Suddenly, you are convincing yourself that a sequinned cape you are unlikely to wear again is a sound investment piece.

Putting together a wedding guest capsule wardrobe is the antidote to buying something for every haldi, mehendi, cocktail and reception. Instead of buying one outfit per function, think in pieces that can change character: a sari that works for more than one event, a statement blouse, jewellery that transitions and shoes that can survive the ceremony and the dance floor.

The point is not to buy less for the sake of it, but to buy better, so your wardrobe is not held hostage by every wedding card that enters the house.

A handloom sari

A sari is still the hardest-working piece in an Indian wedding guest wardrobe, provided you choose one with enough versatility to move across functions. If you are building a capsule, start with a kanjivaram silk sari or a Banarasi sari. It has enough richness for a reception or evening event, but it can be toned down for a daytime ceremony with simpler jewellery and flats. The weave itself is the star and brings occasion value without relying on heavy handwork and embellishments.

If you want to expand your repertoire, consider a tissue sari in gold, silver or a soft neutral. Tissue works particularly well because it can adapt to almost any dress code: styled with a minimal blouse and pearls for a welcome lunch, or paired with a statement blouse and temple jewellery for a cocktail or reception. Between a Banarasi and a tissue sari, you can comfortably cover most wedding events.
