The loose ponytail is chic, effortless and so back. Here’s how to wear it in 2026

Although in recent years, the quintessential hairstyle has been one that featured hair pulled completely back, in the “slick-back bun” style popularised by Hailey Bieber, the late 2026 beauty trends—led by celebrities like Jenna Ortega—are shifting in the opposite direction and embracing a much more relaxed and carefree aesthetic. Although it feels like a breath of fresh air today, this trend draws its inspiration from past decades, specifically the retro fashion of the ’70s and the bohemian ponytails that muses of the eclectic, hippie and disco styles—such as Jane Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda—wore until they became true icons.

At the London press conference for her upcoming film, Klara and the Sun, the actress surprised us with a look that completely breaks away from the gothic vibe she’s known for, opting instead for a retro hairstyle that’s set to be a hit this season.

This on-trend hairstyle is a casual ponytail distinguished by a centre part, loose front strands and volume at the crown, while the rest of the hair features a subtle texture. The result is a messy yet very elegant look, ideal for both a gala event and any day when you want to look equally stylish and effortless.

Ortega paired it with natural-finish makeup that lets her freckles show through, featuring groomed eyebrows, black eyeliner, mascara and a satin nude lipstick. A look that proves that, often, embracing simplicity can be much more powerful than opting for an over-the-top look.
